This blog is about a disturbing trend I'm seeing in some bands, SOMETIMES YOU SHOULDN'T COVER THAT BAND!

I'm not going to call out the band that sparked this thought but I think that some bands you just shouldn't cover. Cover songs are cool, I love when a band takes an old song and puts their own spin on it but there are just sometimes that there's no way you can do it better. Unless you are a musical legend don't do it. So here's a list of band that I think are beyond covering:

Nine Inch Nails- How can you possibly take a NIN song and make it better? I've heard bands try to take the electronic element out but then that just makes it a normal and somewhat boring song. THe one exception I'll give this is Johnny Cash's "Hurt" cover, that was great but he's a legend, he can do that.

Tool- Don't even try!

Led Zeppelin- Do you really want to try and out-do, arguably, one of the best bands ever? No, you'll just piss off a lot of people.

Dream Theater- See Tool, don't even try

Gun's and Roses- This one can be done but you need a killer guitar player and a special type of singer, otherwise you're going to screw it up.

I understand you're trying to pay tribute to these bands by covering their music and thats great but really there's no need to play it live. Any kind of tribute you are trying to pay to the band is just going to anger me as a listener, if I wanted to hear a Nine Inch Nails song I'd go to one of their shows and see how its really done.

These are just a few off the top of my head and I'm sure there's more so feel free to add some more in the comments section, and bands if I see you do any of these you probably suck.

Drew, I am going to fully agree with on that and I'm going to throw one in Hendrix. There is only one band that I have heard even remotley close to atleast sounding similar, and that is creed and even then I still found many flaws. And don't get me wrong it's cool that they want pay tribute to the the bands that truely are awesome ,and gave us foundation for rock but if you can't do it and sound good don't do it at All.

Me too. I fully agree that if you're going to cover a song, at least make it good. Bands that anyone should NOT cover are Ozzy and Metallica, but yet it happens. You can make the song good, but, just don't try to copy Ozzy & James voice. Examples of this is Bullet for My Valentine, they have covered both of them and its OK, but not to good. I don't mind covers of them though. But you need a damn good guitarist to play like Kirk Hammett.
